The So Percussion Collaborative Workshop is a nine-day online festival for musicians from a wide range of musical practices. Based on our successful So Percussion Summer Institute (SoSI) which was held online in July of 2020, the Collaborative Workshop will feature music curated by So Percussion based on the practices of the admitted participants.

The Collaborative Workshop is for musicians at a student or professional level who want to work across disciplines and explore the creative side of music production. Where our summer institute emphasizes the tools and techniques of live performance, the Collaborative Workshop focuses on using technology to produce recordings and videos. Unlike our past festivals, the Collaborative Workshop is open to musicians beyond the realms of percussion and composition. We do not have a separate composition track. The So Percussion online course, originally built for SoSI 2020, will be updated, expanded, and included as part of participation in the workshop.

“[online] SōSI is such an amazingly inspiring experience. I have performed in chamber groups before, but there is something about having two weeks to create awesome recordings and performances that really helps you bond with your fellow performers. Everyone was so nice and supportive. I feel like I have made lifelong connections as well as learned so much about percussion, chamber works, and life in general. I really and truly couldn’t recommend SōSI enough. ” – Kendall R.

Participation in the festival consists of Zoom rehearsals; independent time spent contributing tracks, editing, and mixing; and daily talks from a wide range of guests. At the end, a marathon live-stream of all the projects will be hosted on So Percussion’s channels. We have found that pieces with flexible instrumentation work best in remote collaboration, so that whatever participants have lying around at home can fit into the projects.

In the summer of 2020, Sō Percussion conducted our 12th annual Sō Percussion Summer Institute fully online. With 42 participants from around the world, we collaborated on and produced enough new work for a 5-hour marathon live-streamed performance at the end of the festival. In addition, we offered a huge series of online courses and instructional videos which cover many topics we’ve taught over the last 20 years: the basics of chamber music; our creative process in building immersive shows; the way we commission big new pieces from composers.

Since we opened the festival beyond percussionists and composers, this year’s work also included other instruments including the Haegum from Korea, the Shakuhachi flute from Japan, the steel pan from Trinidad, modular synthesizer, electric guitar, saxophone, keyboard/piano, and voice.  We enjoyed the experience so much that we decided to split our online festival off into a new program!

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, and in an effort to remove barriers of access to our programs, tuition for the workshop will be structured as “pay what you can,” and the online application is free.
